Through its sponsorships, RIT has hosted the women in STEM campaign since 2013, and today is offering its support to the next year of the campaign, called STEM Rising. The organization is asking women to promote the campaign in their organizations and communities as the next campaign year begins in January.
According to the latest data from the National Science Foundation, only 20 percent of bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are earned by women. The data also shows that the percentage of women in STEM has decreased since 2002, from 27 percent to 22 percent.
“Gender equality in the STEM field is critical to our society, and through this partnership, we’re helping to close the persistent gender gap,” says Carolyn L. Rosario, president of RIT. “We’re committed to increasing awareness of and access to the diverse fields of study and careers available to women in STEM.”
“As a career and life balance for women, STEM is about so much more than math and science,” says Stephanie J. Schultes, associate vice president for institutional advancement and director of RIT’s Women in STEM Strategic Alliance. “It’s about caring for others, pursuing meaningful work, and enjoying life. We are proud to support the continued work of the Women in STEM campaign.”
